Why is it called "forward deployed"?

The meaning and origin of the Forward Deployed Engineer title.

Updated 2026-10-20By Forward Deployed Course editorial1 min read

"Forward deployed" means the engineer works out at the customer, rather than back on the core product team. The engineer is placed where the problem is.

Where the title came from

The title is most closely associated with Palantir, which paired forward deployed engineers with deployment strategists at client sites. The engineer built and adapted the software; the strategist handled the client relationship and the problem framing.

Why it spread

As AI companies began selling to large enterprises, they hit the same problem Palantir had: the product only creates value once it works on each customer's data and systems. AI labs, enterprise software companies and AI startups adopted the title for engineers who do that work.

The title today

The role now appears under several names, including Forward Deployed Software Engineer, AI deployment engineer and applied AI engineer. See FDE job titles.
