A day in the life of a Forward Deployed Engineer

What an FDE's week looks like on a live customer deployment, from discovery calls to shipping fixes.

No two FDE weeks match, because no two customers do. But a week on a live deployment usually moves through the same five modes: discover, scope, build, deploy and hand over.

Morning: with the customer

An FDE often starts with the customer's team. That might be a stand-up with their engineers, a session watching how an operations team does a task by hand, or a review of last week's results with the sponsor. The goal is to learn what is actually happening, not what the brief said.

Midday: building

Most of the day is engineering. Typical work includes writing an integration to the customer's CRM, fixing a pipeline that broke on their data, improving retrieval for a question users keep asking, or adding an eval case for a failure seen yesterday.

Afternoon: shipping and showing

Changes go into the customer's environment under their security rules. A short demo on the customer's own data shows progress and surfaces the next problem.

End of day: writing it down

The FDE writes the update for the sponsor, logs decisions, and turns anything the product should do differently into feedback for the core team.

What makes it hard

Context switching, ambiguous asks and working in someone else's infrastructure. What makes it rewarding is seeing software you wrote change how a real team works. Read the five modes in detail.
