Demand for FDEs in India is rising fast: Indeed India recorded nearly 19 times more FDE postings year on year in 2026. Demand is not the same as fit, though.
The case for
- Transferable skills. Customer depth plus production engineering transfers to product management, solutions architecture and founding a company.
- Visible impact. You see your work change how a real team operates.
- Fast learning. Every customer is a new stack, domain and set of constraints.
The case against
- Context switching between customers, meetings and code.
- Travel and on-site time at some companies.
- Ambiguity. Briefs are vague and priorities shift.
Who it suits
Engineers who like people and ambiguity, and client-facing people who want to build. If you prefer deep, uninterrupted focus on one codebase, a core product role may suit you better. Compare the role with yours on the roles hub.
